Rack Safety for E-Commerce Fulfillment Centers

Fulfillment operations put people up in the rack. Pick modules, mezzanines and multi-level pick faces mean the hazard is not only what falls out of a bay but who is standing on the level above — and the throughput pressure that makes these buildings work also means nothing gets shut down for long.

What makes this different

Every elevated pick level needs a gap, and the gap is the hazard

A pallet has to get onto the mezzanine somehow, which means the guardrail opens. Self-closing pallet gates and pivot gates are designed so one side is always closed — the barrier never fully leaves the edge during the loading cycle. Mezzanine gate specifications commonly reference OSHA fall-protection requirements for elevated work surfaces (29 CFR 1910.28 and 1910.29).

High SKU velocity means constant contact

The same bay is touched dozens of times a day, and every touch is a chance to nudge a frame or push a load too far back. Beam-mounted pallet stops limit over-travel, and column protection absorbs the accumulated low-level contact that high-velocity picking produces.

Mixed case sizes need mixed deck and divider specs

A fulfillment bay rarely holds one uniform SKU. Wire dividers partition the bay so lines stay separated, and deck selection has to account for the smallest item in the bay rather than the largest.
